InstaVeil field guide
Stories & highlights.
Understand what went wrong.
A missing story, a stale video link and a private account need different answers. Start with what you see, then follow the steps that apply.

What do you see?
Select a symptom. This guide runs in your browser; it does not inspect an Instagram account or perform a live availability check.
Your next steps
Check the result, not just the empty tray
An unavailable source does not tell us whether the account has posted. A verified empty result and a failed lookup are different states.
- Confirm the spelling of the public username. A renamed account may have a different address.
- Read the availability message. If the check failed, wait before trying again; repeated refreshes do not create new data.
- If you can view the public profile on Instagram, compare the story there. A story may have expired or been removed since the previous lookup.
InstaVeil cannot restore an expired story or establish that an unavailable account has no stories.
Three states worth distinguishing
- Available
- The service received media that can be offered to the player. A thumbnail alone does not prove the video will load. Playback must also fetch and decode the actual file.
- Empty
- A source returned a recognizable collection with no current items. An HTTP success code by itself is insufficient: a login page or an error wrapped in a successful response is not a verified empty collection.
- Unavailable
- The request could not establish the collection’s contents. It may have timed out, reached a restriction or returned an unexpected response. This state says nothing definite about whether the owner posted.
Two different clocks
A live story has a publication lifetime. A media file can also have a separate, signed download URL that expires. Saving the URL does not preserve access to the story.
For example, a story published at 14:00 UTC with a 24-hour lifetime reaches its normal expiry at 14:00 UTC the following day. A failed refresh at 13:55 does not extend that deadline. Removal by the owner can make it unavailable earlier.
Highlights differ: a saved collection can outlive the original story, but its individual file URLs may still expire. InstaVeil retains collection metadata for continuity and requests current media when you open it. Known expired links are filtered out rather than presented as working videos.
A dated playback check
What we observed on one public profile
On September 17, 2026, around 19:13 UTC, we checked NASA’s public profile in the deployed InstaVeil viewer. These are observations from that session, not current counts or a site-wide reliability score.
- Live stories returned
- 2
- Highlight collections returned
- 5
- Items in the opened Roman collection
- 9
We verified that the video playhead advanced, rather than counting a rendered cover as success. A live-story video reported a 60-second duration and advanced beyond 8 seconds. A Roman highlight video reported approximately 20.7 seconds and advanced beyond 17 seconds; the player also advanced to the next item.
The Roman summary reported 10 items while the opened collection returned 9. That mismatch matters: the test demonstrated playback of returned media, not complete recovery of every frame. One account and one session cannot establish availability for all accounts, devices or future visits.
Report something we can reproduce
A useful report identifies the public username, the collection title or item position, the exact message, the date and time with timezone, and the browser/device. Say whether the cover appeared, whether playback started, and whether other items worked. A screenshot of the error can help; crop out personal information.
Never include passwords, session cookies, API keys or private-account media. Viewing public material does not grant permission to republish it. Ask the creator before reusing their work.
