Instagram Stories vs Highlights: What’s the Difference?

Stories and highlights can contain similar media, but they have different lifecycles. Understanding that difference makes it easier to know what an Instagram viewer should be able to show.

Stories are temporary

A standard Instagram story is designed around a limited viewing window, commonly about 24 hours. After that, it is no longer a live story unless the profile owner preserves it elsewhere.

Highlights are curated collections

Highlights let a profile owner keep selected story content visible on the profile for longer. Public highlights can therefore remain available after the original live-story window has ended.

InstaVeil keeps them separate

When the public data is available, InstaVeil treats live stories and highlight collections as distinct profile surfaces instead of presenting old media as if it were still a live story.
